Chapter 25

After their sushi lunch, the three friends left Barney to get back to his hectic work schedule and returned to the village. They decided to meet back at the tearoom. There was a lot to discuss and baking to be done if Liz and Sylvie were to be sure of having enough stock when they opened the following morning. There was a delivery of cakes due from one of the contractors first thing. But for certain regulars, only Liz’s cakes were good enough, and somehow they were able to tell the difference.

Sylvie ran home to freshen up and Harriet went past her cottage so that she could pick up some stationery. The ladies had previously found it enormously helpful to write down their findings and ideas on Post-it notes and arrange them accordingly to help make sense of information gathered throughout an investigation. That way they could add something whenever they thought of it, and common threads could emerge. It was a tried and tested method which they all approved of — when they were dealing with a lot of information, a visual aid helped to make sense of it.

After an hour or so of baking, they each selected a large sheet of paper, a pen and a pad of Post-it notes, which they took to separate tables to list out everything they had learned throughout their morning endeavours.

Liz was the first to finish, and as she sat back, a thought occurred to her. She called across to Harriet. ‘Do you still have that list on you?’

‘The chauffeur details Barney gave me?’

‘Yes.’

Harriet rummaged through her bag.

‘Here it is.’ She handed it over.

Liz scanned the list, then glanced at her watch. ‘Do you two fancy accompanying me to the funeral home?’ Until his death, Liz’s husband, Vince, had co-owned the funeral home, located a mile or so out of Monksworthy, with his business partner, David Pritchard. When Vince passed, his shares in the business were transferred to Liz, who remained a silent partner, but David still managed the day-to-day running of the place.

‘That’s a bit random, isn’t it?’ said Sylvie, as she put down her pen and stretched.

‘You’ve found something, haven’t you?’ asked Harriet.

‘Possibly. I just can’t shake the idea that Christine Holloway might have something to do with the poisoning. What Hannah told me suggests that she was up to something around those cars. She saw her open one of the doors then bend down and reach inside, and Hannah didn’t think it was the car that Christine had travelled in.’

‘We agreed it sounds suspicious, when you first told us,’ said Sylvie.

‘Well, when I was speaking to Diane and Gloria today, I was told that Christine left the others before they started the judge’s tour, claiming that she needed to use the loo. Apparently, she was gone for ten minutes.’

‘Rather a long time for a comfort break,’ added Harriet. ‘Sounds to me as though she used the excuse of needing the loo as a cover story for whatever she was up to.
